He was a solid C-player, with his rating rarely outside the 1500-1600 range. But I will remember him most for his gentle demeanour, his unfailing willingness to help set up early on Tuesdays, and the brief chats we had before the rounds.

The first person I played a chess game with in Manitoba. Agreed all around with comments of his gentle demeanor.
I think "solid C player" understates the case with Brian. My coaching advice for games with him has always been, "Don't take him for granted! He usually plays the openings in a solid style and he can surprise you by playing A Class or Expert moves. Sometimes it takes a very good move to beat him." His performance stalled because of chronic illness, which only reinforced the difficulties of overcoming the usual problem with over-the-board confidence.
