White to mate in 2 (Mansfield) |
This may be cooked.
1. Ng6 and
1. Qh6 apparently are valid.
and Steve additionally points out that 1.Ng2 works also.
Update: Nov 2. I have tracked down the original problem, published in the American Chess Bulletin, 1942. The pawn on g3 should be a bishop.

Hmm, I thought this problem has two solutions, I was wrong.
1.Ng2 also works, so does 1.Qh6+
Ah.
Ng2 and Ng6 both lose to the same idea of Bd1+ making white take an extra move.
Qh6! is the only idea that works.
.. Kxh6 2. Bxf4++
.. Kxh4 2. Qf6++
As I thought, my calculations could use some work :)
Steve
1. Ng6 still works.
1...Bd1+
2. Bc2#
1.Ng2 does work.
1...Bf7+ 2.Be6++
1...Bd1+ 2.Bc2++
1...Bxe8 2.Qh4++
All other moves met with either Bxf4++ or with h4++
