Robert Feldstein

Just came across this article:

http://main.uschess.org/content/view/11516/646

I played this fellow in Wisconsin in 1999. While researching when he may have played in Manitoba, I noticed that I played in the same section as him in the 1998 Toronto International.  Does anyone know when may have played in Manitoba ?

2011 Chess Night # 2- Tuesday, December 13

The Manitoba Chess Association will close out the year with a night of informal  chess related activities.
We tried this in August; over 40 chess enthusiasts enjoyed several activities. It was such a success that we decided to try it again.

Renew acquaintances old and new !
Shoot the breeze about Carlsen's latest exploits
Shake off  the rust with a few blitz games !
Listen to a lecture on pawn sacrifices from a Master !
Buy and/or sell chess books !

Drop in any time on the evening of December 13 to room 4CM42 at the University of Winnipeg.
There is no admission fee.

There are a couple of Scheduled events, but don't feel compelled to participate- you may wish to just hang out.

7:00 pm.  Doors Open
8:00 p.m.: lecture: National Master Jonathon Zaczek on 'Pawn Sacrifices in the Opening. Free to all

Through-out the night (approx 7:00 - 10:30)
Informal games - pair off with another player - pick your time control and have some fun.

There will also be an opportunity to make room on your bookshelves by selling a few books. Set a price, put a post-it note or sticker with your price and name on the book, and bring it for potential sale to another chess enthusiast.  There will also be a few chess clocks and chess sets for sale.

2011 Mike Shpan Memorial and 2011 Tournament of Champions starts Tuesday, November 1, 2011

Two tournaments start Tuesday, running in parallel: the traditional Mike Shpan Memorial, and the second installment of the  Tournament of Champions.  Both will run for 6 consecutive Tuesdays.
Details are below, but in brief, the Tournament of Champions is restricted to those over 1800 rating ; the Mike Shpan Memorial  is open to all.

Also, the tournaments may require a 'house-player(s)'
The 'house-player' fills in when there are an uneven number of players for any round. The addition of the 'house player' avoids the situation where a player is awarded a bye. There is no guarantee that the house player would be required in any given week - I would say it is roughly a 50% possibility.
If you are interested in acting as a 'house player' please contact me (Tony) - chessmanitoba at  gmail.com
ideally you are a CFC member - No entry fee for the tournament is required, but  in the circumstance that you win a prize - an entry fee will be deducted from the prize.  So, in essence, the 'house player' is free-rolling.

Mike Shpan Memorial Tournament

GM Yermolinsky laying down the rules of engagement

Greetings - Ken Einarsson is to my left

Game started 1.d4 Nf6 2. c4 e6 3.Nf3

Final position - Black was crushed in just over 20 moves. I took a somewhat poisoned pawn, gave up another tempo later, and then missed the power of Qh5. But the Subway sandwiches were good !
I was sure Ken would be mated before my game was over. Look at that monarch on h6.

Me and Yermo holding down the top 2 boards. Okay, the sharp observer will note that we both have the White pieces. I am playing IM Victor Adler. r

2011 September  TNT tournament

4CM42 <-click here for map
4 rounds - one game on each of September 6, 13, 20, 27 - (This is not a knockout tournament, players will play all 4 rounds)
Please note that we intend to start the first round at 7:00 p.m. sharp.

Tuesday Night Tournaments are held every month of the year, (except for November and December when things are organized a little differently).

There is one game per week.

All of the TNTs are Swiss (pairing) style tournaments with a time control of G /110 minutes [Each player has 1 hour 50 minutes  to complete their moves, the game will be be 3 hours and 40 minutes maximum]

The TNTs are typically 4 round events (one game for 4 consecutive Tuesdays in the month), sometimes 5 rounds. Start time is 7:00 pm and the TD will confirm costs
( $ 15 entry fee, and CFC membership required[$ 20 for a one-tournament membership or $ 49 for 12 months- new members pay only $ 36 for the year])

Registration for tournament -Tuesday, September 6  - approximately 6:35 pm to 6:50 pm

Registration will be cut off at 6:50 pm. (If you think you may be late, please send an email to
chessmanitoba 'at' gmail.com) before 5 pm (you can try later, but the wireless access at the U may be problematic)

This is very near the weekend room of 5L24 and is in fact on the same 'floor'.

Easiest way to get there is the same way to 5L24 - take the elevator at the north end (Ellice) to the 5th Floor(if that Elevator is operating) Otherwise, there is an elevator just to the west of the Bookstore.
Our goal is to start the first round at 7:00 p.m. sharp.
