Okay solvers, this is an easy one, I found it within a minute. All the clues are quite transparent.

Solutions: Apparently there is a 'cook', unless I got the position wrong.

Stephen in the comments hit on both of them but rejected 1. Nf3 because of 1...Nc6, but then 2.Bxf7#

But 1. Rxc3 apparently mates in two also.

No draws ! No upsets ! Boron disappointed the rest of the pack with 1.5 by failing to stop Kaptsan who now sits alone 3-0. It will likely be Khedkar's task next week to create a tie for first.

Dwight has informed me that Trevor drew with Black against Keith MacKinnon.
So 4-5 in a very tough and experienced crowd. A very credible result.
Trevor's FIDE rating is estimated to be 2131 on the September list.

18. h3 appears to be the first new move. White with 25. Bf5 allows Trevor to preserve the exchange for a move, when he gives it back under favourable circumstances. The rest is easy for a player of Trevor's caliber.

15...d5 looks like a new move, but 17...Nxc3 may be a problem...the silicon beast prefers 17...Nf6, as in the game Black's centre gets busted up and his king is stuck in the middle. But White apparently missed some moves to grab a big advantage, and Trevor is close to equalizing after 27...Qf6 instead of 27...Rf5??

Trevor defeated Calugar to move to a fine 2.5 - 1.5, only .5 behind the six leaders.

He gets a stern test Wednesday with Black against FM Jonathan Tayar (2436).

Game was tough and very sharp (Stonewall Dutch) with the younger (and much improved) of the Kaminski brothers from Calgary. Trevor was in a positional situation he didn't like for most of the game. However he managed to pull out a draw in the endgame. It was a very tense game for both players with a weird pattern of pawns in the middlegame.

We will be following the Canadian Closed in Guelph where Manitoba champion Trevor Vincent had Black against IM Artiom Samsonkin (2584) in today's Round 1.

Trevor's father Dwight says, "Trevor played Samsonkin, the 2nd highest rated player. It went the full 5 hours and Trevor resigned with about 20 seconds on his clock in an endgame position he thought wasn't great.
This is a very strong tournament in everyone's agreement. So far it's being
run very well in my opinion."

Trevor survived early pressure and equalizes after tripling on the g-file. Rybka didn't like 45...Rc6, preferring 45...Bh4, keeping the White king at home. In the game, the king quickly becomes White's best piece.

"Johnny" sighting

I was perusing the US Open standings today when I came across a listing for
FM Glenn Johnstone. "Johnny" is about three years younger than me; he was a regular in the Winnipeg tournaments in the late seventies and beyond. He got really strong / and moved to Ontario a long time ago. He appears to have returned to chess and resurfaced in Kentucky or thereabouts.
